J365 NEWS: A man from Kothagudem district has died after contracting rabies from a scratch caused by his pet dog. Believing the injury to be too minor, the victim did not seek medical attention or take preventive vaccination. Within a few days his condition worsened, and despite medical efforts, he could not be saved.
Health experts described rabies as one of the deadliest viral infections, with no cure once symptoms appear. They stressed, however, that it is entirely preventable if treatment is taken on time. Dr. Praveen stated that even a small scratch or lick from an infected animal can spread the virus. “People often underestimate minor wounds, but rabies does not differentiate. Every bite, scratch, or lick from dogs, cats, or stray animals must be treated seriously,” he said.
Dr. Praveen further explained that washing the wound immediately with soap and water for at least fifteen minutes, applying antiseptic, and seeking urgent medical care can significantly reduce the risk. He also urged the public to begin post-exposure vaccination without delay and ensure regular immunization of domestic pets.
